Current Reading January 2012

Posted: January 17, 2012 in Books

Currently I am Reading:

The Peshawar Lancers by S.M. Stirling

So far a rousing alt-history tale.  I can see why so many list it on their must read lists.

The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas

Next up on my Kindle.  Another classic that I’ve always wanted to read but never took the time for.

1809 Thunder on the Danube: Napoleon’s Defeat of the Habsburgs  Volume III: Wagram and Znaim by John H. Gill

I finally got around to getting the 3rd and final volume of this excellent history of the 1809 Danube Campaign.  It’s getting my interest in Napoleonics stirred back up, which is good since I have a couple hundred AB’s to paint up.

Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits  by Philip Fisher

It finally turned up stuck under the seat of my car.  Now back to reading it.

What I’ve finished Reading:

King Solomon’s Mines by H.Rider Haggard

My wife got me a Kindle Touch for Christmas.  I’ve pulled a selection of classic novels off of the free library that I’ve always wanted to read.  This was the first.  I can see why it set of a whole new genre.  Great read!

A Painting Pledge for 2012

Posted: January 7, 2012 in Painting Pledge

I’ve been pondering ways of keeping myself motivated and productive with getting some of my pile o’lead painted up.  I’ve come up with my own variant on the painting pledge for 2012.  I’ll post here on my progress as well as in the monthly threads on TMP and the LAF.

My pledge is paint a miniature for each week, but not necessarily completed each week.  In other words complete a minimum of fifty-two 25mm miniature equivalents for the year.  Here’s how I’m going to “score” it, based on what I’m hoping to paint in the next year.

1/1200 Napoleonic ship painted and rigged = 2

25mm/28mm  figure, FOW tank/large vehicle, 1/2400 ship = 1

15mm/18mm figure, FOW small vehicle, 1/285 plane, 1/285 tank/vehicle = 0.5

6mm figure = 0.25

My rewards for keeping on target:  1) No new single mini purchases until 26 points accumulated.  2) No new units added for current projects until all 52 points scored.  3)  No new projects unless 104 points scored.

2011 Year End Wrap-up

Posted: January 7, 2012 in Year End Wrap-ups

2011 is now but a memory.  I had high hopes for getting back in the groove with some hobbytime.  Real life of course had other ideas.  I got a ton of things started but didn’t manage to get much moved onto the table, nor did I really get that much gaming in.  2012 dawns another  year so we shall see what happens.  Here’s the number of my 2011 hobby.

Miniatures Stats  2011:

Bought For 2011:     252

Painted For 2011:     14

Difference:               -238

Last year I bought 27 and painted 8.  So I did increase my painting output, just not as much as I had hoped.

May–finished 12 28mm Eureka Teddy Bear Pirates and 1 accompanying gun

June–finished 1 1:2400 Panzerschiffe  Graf Spee

I started into another project of a Flames of War army and finally finished up a project of the Eureka Teddy Bear Pirates.  I also got about 50% done on a BloodBowl team and around 33% done on another 10 or so 1:2400 WWII ships.  My ever present 18mm AB Napoleonics saw around 50% painted on another unit of British Line.  I also got a varying amout done of half a dozen 25mm Reaper fantasy figures.

This blog saw a hit an miss year.  I managed to eke out 39 posts.  I was aiming for at least 1/week in addition to the monthly wrap ups so I fell short there.  Blog hits for the year were 1,275, up from 301 the previous year.  My most popluar post was a review of worklight I bought from IKEA.  I need to work on more quality content for the next year.

That’s the year in a nutshell.  I’ll post more on my plans for 2012.

December 2011 Wrap-up

Posted: January 4, 2012 in Monthly Wrap-ups

Miniatures Stats December 2011:

Bought for Month:     7                                                 For 2011:     251

Painted for Month:    0                                                 For 2011:     14

Bought:  3x Battlefront Flakpanzer 38(t), 2x Battlefront Wespe, and 2x Battlefront Horch Kfz 15 staff cars
Completed: Nothing
A pretty weak end to the year on the painting front.  Christmas festivities, decorating, and un-decorating took up most of my normal meager hobby time.  I also spent a fair bit of time on World of Tanks as well as actually finishing a couple of books.  I’ve moved on to planning for 2012, but I’ll wrap up the entire year and plans for the new year in another post.
